About the ThresherCam System

Developed and built by Marine Imaging Technologies, LLC, for harsh ocean environments, ThresherCam is designed to keep costly data and video safe. It has no moving parts and consists of a small stainless steel camera head with a separate power and recording bottle.

Operation is simple:
*Load recording media, close housing and press record.
*Check the led indicator to confirm the recording has started.
*Send ThresherCam to the bottom to see what your gear is doing.

The rechargeable battery pack and media card can provide up to 12+ hours of recording time. Typical installations have a small camera head (1.5 x 3") mounted facing the observation area with the recording bottle mounted nearby. The mounting system provides flexibility in configuration and allows for quick changes on deck as data is collected and subject focus changes. Options for adding tether also allows images to be viewed in real-time on the boat.

Recording Option:
The recorder is the heart and soul of ThresherCam. We have spent several years using and abusing this recorder and continuously test it against other systems on the market. Nothing comes close.

No other recorders have the reliability and shock durability, along with the very high MegaByte recording rates that ThresherCam offers. In addition, the built-in axis sensors and the ability to record numerous other data signals - and even other cameras - makes this the "black box" of standard definition recording systems.

Options: There are several options of recording systems available for ThresherCam. While we recommend Options 3 and 4 due to the guaranteed shock rating standards, all systems have been used on deepwater trawls and have a proven track record of performance and keeping data secure. From there the main questions are budget, recording rates, and application specifics.

Built for challenging environments

Since 2010, ThresherCam has been in use by both small researchers and large organizations such as NOAA and NMFS for in situ video and data collection on everything from scallop dredges to seine nets and in up to 1000 feet of water. Its recorder modules also have customizable sensor package options for adding CAN-based sensors such as salinity, temperature, light levels, yaw, pitch and roll, and is available in Standard Definition.  High Definition options have been developed and are being tested for release in spring 2014.

Secure Data

With bit rates up to 20MB and video recorded to CF cards, the data gathered is not only safe, but high quality.

Highly-ruggedized design

With no moving parts and a mil spec recording system, data will not be lost due to vibration or shock while being dragged through the water over the roughest terrain.

No Cables to the Surface Necessary

ThresherCam is a fully autonomous system that can be mounted to any piece of equipment and sent to 1000 feet with no cables to the surface.

Live Onboard Viewing

Tethered options are available to allow live, on-board viewing and data collection and transmission.

Data Logging

Need more data besides video? Ask about the CAN interface allowing for a time-stamped integrated data package. Yaw, pitch, roll, salinity, temperature and depth are a few possibilities.
